Just thought I'd mention I got the new issue of Purple Sky in the mail yesterday, and it feels like there's twice the amount of stuff as in past issues. In the past I'd breeze through it in a single evening while waiting for BF2 matches to load, but this time it's taken a whole day to even make a dent in the reading, and I haven't even checked out the non-VK stuff yet (of which there is much; probably 50/50).

I'd be saying this even if my industry interview with Franz (from J) wasn't inside (part of which covers how he hooked up with J in the first place, and the circumstances behind him getting "let go" at the end).

The Kisaki interview is also pretty slick ("There's no human as perfect as me."), but I also dig the three pages near the front where various Under Code bands give a paragraph or two of commentary on their new releases (for example, Siva writes, "The concept for Homura was a flame that hadn't' even had a chance to burn yet. We chose songs that flickered quietly..."). Insightful stuff.

Plus live reports, with pix (Deg @ Nokia, Independence D, and for non-VK coverage, SxSW and NYC Japan Nite shows.) And the mini-posters in the back are a totally neat idea, even if two of them are of Lovely Moco Death.

It's at Barnes & Noble and at purpleskymagazine.com (where else?)...

Apparently, Purple Sky's at Hot Topic as well.

whiteskwirl 6/05/2007 07:47:00 PM

It says on the website that international orders are suspended right now due to the increase in postage.

Go, sometimes the stupidest shit you say just cracks me up.

Lovely Moco Death.

No clever word play or harsh insult. It just is. I think it's the simplicity behind it that does it for me.

I had to fight tooth and nail against the fuckers over at jrock_scans on lj to try and keep purple sky from being scanned. Pretty much everyone was of the opinion "hey, it's a relatively small new magazine that needs support to survive, go buy it instead of scanning it up here asshole", and there'd always be half a dozen shits whining.

I'm glad the magazine contacted the community themselves. Even then there were whiners complaining "well if we don't allow this magazine, what's next? We don't allow Shoxx?!", like it was an option to go along with the magazine's legal C&D.

I gave feedback on the purple sky site suggesting they sell a .pdf version. That way they could still reach the international market until international shipping comes back.

thx, Chex :)

@Silv - is Jrock_Scans mostly US-based? Since PurpleSKy is US-based and easily/cheaply acquired here, i would hope people would buy it, but then, for people in, say, Brazil, Purple Sky is just as hard to get as Shoxx would be, wouldn't it? So if it's "OK" for Shoxx to be ill-gottenly gained, wouldn't that be true for PSky as well?

Mostly i just think anything that can be copied will be copied, and that if you wanna buy the mag/cd/game and enjoy the "full experience" than that's good, and if not, fine...?

i dunno, i just don't wanna be a hypocrite and be like, "Hey, it's okay to DL anything except MY stuff."

@WS - i dunno if they'd go for a pdf, but i guess its worth a try. (My thinking is "if it's a pdf, why not just make it a website, then?")
(Answer: physical magazines are cooler than websites)

whiteskwirl 6/05/2007 09:50:00 PM

Yes, physical magzines are cooler by far. But for someone in another country, it may be the only legal alternative right now.

Silvanos 6/05/2007 10:19:00 PM

I think its mostly Americans. There were always a couple Finnish people or something complaining about international shipping and stuff though.
I have no problem with something being shared if its established, like a major label band or Shoxx or Cure. They're huge, a community of a few thousand people in America isn't going to kill them. My argument was if you don't buy it now, it won't be there in six months for you to scan and you'll all feel like dumbasses for scanning it now.

Im from Argentina and I got a 4-issue subscription 2 months ago via paypal. If they canceled the intl orders now guess I got lucky ^_^.
They E-mailed me last week saying that it was shipped but it did not arrive yet T_T

i don't disagree with yer point Silv, it's totally true: i just wonder if it's possible to damp down people's hard-wired instincts towards greed and immediate gratification.

Klisk 6/06/2007 06:58:00 AM

I'll buy individual issues of Purple Sky now that they hiked the price, if I find that the articles are interesting and the specific issue I want is worth my time..

.. But I wouldn't reopen my subscription. The pricing is way too high/ballsy IMO. I don't hold it against them or anything, but I'm very particular and weird about my money. Then again, I don't have a steady paycheck like most people do.

About that Siva release. It's really good stuff. I kept having to check and see if I wasn't playing some long lost deg stuff (from 99-2003).
They're like a completely different band now that they have a decent drummer and their vocalist started taking some lessons. Have to check out their comments...

Hey go,

Thanks for posting about the mag!

Purple SKY will be available at Hot Topic, Borders and Barnes & Noble. It will not be available at all the stores. We got a list from Borders and B&N. That'll be posted up in two weeks. Hot Topic does not send a store list, so please check with your local store.

We're still working on the international shipping issue. We just shipped a batch to Lolita Kisama and you can place international orders with them at http://www.lokisa.com/

Just as a comment on the scanning. The notice sent was a blanket notice sent to over 100 emails. It wasn't sent to jrock scans specifically and it mentioned that scans were ok, but please don't scan the whole magazine in. We're not against scanning for personal use or for promoting the magazine. We just hope people will enjoy it enough to want to buy it. Otherwise, what's the point in printing a magazine?

Well, I'd like to own an issue of it as a collector's item. So one day I'll come to a kid that could be as old as a son for me and say: "You're going to see that (crappy) Japanese band tomorrow in your city because of things like this".

But whatever. One less selling for them.
