i sorta feel guilty not devoting a whole post to this album's review, because it's really good. I loved the musicality of
Ascendency and disliked the less musical, more "brootal"
Crusade;
Shogun fits in neatly between these two albums, being heavier than the former and mroe musical than the latter.
No idea what the opening track, "Kirisute Gomen," means, though, and neither does
wwwJdic.
The techy groove of "Charybdis" I like a lot, and other songs have some really great parts; I can proudly wear my Trivium wristband again. The japanese bonus tracks are worth getting, too.
:)
lazarus ADbetter than your average thrash, like something exodus or testament would've done two decades back, except modernized and interesting-ized, and played with sprightly rage, with a powerful, up-front production that features every instrument clearly.

amon amarthtwilight of the thunder god 2008
the title track is their best song since 2003's "Where Silent Gods Stand Guard," capturing that unapologetic viking metal vibe that is their stock-in-trade. In fact, this whole album shows off a more diverse, talented style of songwriting (check out "Free Will Sacrifice" and "Varyags of Miklagaard") that breathes new life into a band that I don't think anyone expected to go anywhere.

I imagine "kirisute" is some form of "cut."
"I AM SORRY THAT I HAVE SLAYED YOU!!!"
Wait, are you sure you don't have those two Trivium releases backwards? Ascendency (in my opinion, the better album) was the one with the screaming, while The Crusade was just them trying to sound like Metallica.
What did you think of the production on (of?) the A.A. album? Same guy that produced and/or mixed and/or engineered the most recent few Opeth and Katatonia releases.
"The phrase "Kirisute Gomen" is of Japanese origin. It means "You're Sword Fodder" and was often said by ancient shoguns before they made their kill. This links in with the lyric "We take their fucking heads", and shoguns would often behead enemies."
So sayeth Wikipedia.
@f - is that what they were trying to sound like on Crusade? (I woulda said Slayer.) ^_^
@e - i liked the production of the Amon Amarth album, but in a "oh, this sounds better/clearer than their other stuff" way, rather than in a "omg i love the production" kind of way.
@ame - sounds good, tho i don't totally trust Wikipedia on stuff like this.
The Crusade is more like Maiden than Metallica.
Best review I saw for Shogun simply said "It was the album Metallica SHOULD have made".
oh, metallica couldn't play with that much energy if they drank 1000 RockStars! Whoever wrote that review was probably under the drinking age. :)
Gordo,
I disagree. New Trivium is terrible, and how can you say the last one was 'non musical'? It is/was the MOST musical of their 4 albums! the most melody, and actual singing! They mar the new one with way too many mallcore vokills.
